Meetings, Events and Study Abroad

Who are we?

We’re an association with around 25 members in Frankfurt (Oder) that’s been bringing together all generations of France lovers for more than 15 years. We’re open to anyone who is enthusiastic about France, the French language and everything related to it. We also have a partner association in Duisburg that has existed for 55 years and with which we organise exchanges at regular intervals.

What events do we organise?

Fun and games

On warm spring and summer evenings, some members like to meet up to play boules on the Anger (Lindenstraße). In winter and on rainy days, we try our hand at Scrabble in French and German. We also organise small tournaments for both games to create new challenges.

Learning and Keeping up  language skills

We offer monthly conversation evenings. Conversation I is aimed at people who want to learn French. This conversation is led by one of our members who has a lot of experience in teaching foreign languages. There is also Conversation II, which is usually led by a first language speaker. This course is aimed at people who already speak French well because they have spent some time in France or have studied the language at school for several years.

Tradition and Celebrations

This means a lot to us. That's why we like to find out about the differences, but also the similarities between Germany and France. We try French recipes, bake and enjoy a "Galette des Rois" and taste French wines. We also welcome the "Beaujolais Primeur" every year. Highlights of our programme are, of course, the summer and Christmas festivities.

How can you get in touch with us?

Through the Chairperson, Dr Gudrun Frey, by phone: (0335) 535597 or by email. You will then receive the current dates for events via our mailing list.

By the way: We are looking for interested members, because the more committed members we find, the more varied and exciting we can make our programme.

We look forward to your active interest.

See you soon, à bientôt!

Guest lectures in French: "Rendez-vous sur l'Oder"

The "Rendez-vous sur l'Oder" (RVO) is the established tradition of guest lectures in French and has been running with generally three lectures per semester since the Winter Semester 2007/08. The series was significantly influenced by the historian and German studies scholar Thomas Serrier (initially University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis, Institut d'Études européennes, now Université de Lille), who was the first French guest professor at Viadrina from 2007 to 2017.

The organisers are the French Department at the Viadrina Language Centre and the French Visiting Professorships, in particular as part of the strategic partnership with the University of Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), organised in the programme / chair Pensées françaises contemporaines and affiliated with the interdisciplinary degree programmes in European Studies. External cooperation partners are the Franco-German research centre Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin, the France Centre at Freie Universität Berlin and the Genshagen Foundation.

The RVO are directly thematically linked to the courses of the French guest professors, which are usually combined with an in-depth language course as part of training in "Scientific Communication" (level C1 CEFR) at the Language Centre of the Viadrina.

Culture and events in Berlin

The Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW) / l'office franco-allemand pour la jeunesse (OFAJ) promotes the exchange of young people from Germany and France.
